Project detail: 

Purpose/Need: To increase access to distributed renewable energy and provide farmers with reliable daytime electricity for irrigation, while reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-based power and strengthening the electricity distribution network. The program responds to unreliable agricultural power supply, high subsidy burdens and increasing climate-related risks to agriculture. Activity: Installation of 500,000 off-grid solar water pumps, strengthening/upgrading the electricity distribution system, and providing technical assistance and capacity building. Capacity/Scale: 500,000 solar water pumps over five years; construction/upgradation of 125 substations (approximately 45 new and 80 upgrades), with the substation component covering Akola and Jalgaon districts. Importance/Benefits: The program is expected to support reliable irrigation, agricultural productivity, cleaner energy use, reduced fossil-fuel dependence and improved rural livelihoods. Small and marginal farmers are identified as the primary beneficiaries.

Project Cost: USD 1,835 million (approximately USD 1.835 billion) total program cost. Proposed AIIB financing is USD 1,100 million
