Project detail:
The road transport subsector currently contributes 12% of India's energy related CO2 emissions, and as India meets increasing demand for transporting people and goods, energy use and CO2 emissions from the road transport could double by 2050. Maharashtra state is one of the largest contributors to India's greenhouse gas emissions being highly industrialized, the second-most populous state, and having the largest share of all-India's gross domestic product. Strong economic and population growth in Maharashtra continues to drive transport demand and without intervention, Maharashtra's road transport subsector will continue to rely on gasoline and diesel, resulting in rising energy use and CO2 emissions. Bold action is needed to limit the growth of CO2 emissions in Maharashtra's road transport subsector including long-term strategies to achieve low-carbon transition of passenger, freight, and heavy vehicles consistent with India's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets and net zero emission pathway for 2070.
