Project Detail:
Strengthening Transit Oriented Development for Urban Transformation in Indian Cities.
The knowledge and support TA will support India to strengthen capacities to plan and implement sustainable urban growth strategies based on transit-oriented development (TOD) principles and using land planning tools that enable compact development along mass transit corridors, ensure sustainable mobility, facilitate land value creation and capture to expand the municipal revenue base. Project Rationale and Linkage toCountry/Regional Strategy Urban India, which accounted for 31% of the total population and 60% of the national gross domestic product in 2011, is expanding rapidly. Demographic models suggest that the urban population was 460 million in 2018 and is expected to nearly double by 2050 accounting for 50% of the total population. Given the key role that urbanization has played in economic development internationally - through several channels collectively known as agglomeration economies - it presents an unprecedented opportunity for India to contribute towards its aspiration to become a $40 trillion economy by 2047, andcreate productive and well-paying jobs for its young population. To realize its potential, the urbanization process needs to be managed in an integrated manner to channel growth, catalyze strategic renewal, and enhance competitiveness.
