Project Detail:
The Baranj Opencast Coal Mine in Kiloni, Manora Deep, Baranj I to IV Coal Blocks of M/s Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) covers areas of Villages – Somnala, Bonthala, Chak Baranj, Kadholi, Kesurli, Chichordi & Baranj Mokasa of Bhadravati Taluka of Chandrapur District of Maharashtra.
The Project Area is covered under Survey of India Toposheet No. 55 P/4. The area is bounded by Latitude 20 0 6’43” E to 20 0 8’59” E and Longitude 79 0 5’47” N to 79 0 8’28” N.
The existing Mining Lease is 1457.20 Ha. However, the Mining Lease presently has been executed for 1379.50 Ha. In addition to this Stage -2 Forest Clearance has been obtained for the diversion of Forest Land to the extent of 84.41 Ha and despite compliance of stipulated conditions the formal handing over of this land is under process. On completion of these formalities the ML area will be 1457.20 Ha. Thus , The Lease Area shall be 1457.2 Ha in Phase – 1 and 1576.82 Ha in Phase – 2. The Lease area involves 1276.21 Ha Private Land, 96.58 Ha Government Non-Forest Land, 6.71 Ha Zudpi Jungle Land, 77.70 Ha Forest Land in Phase – 1. The Project is an already operating Coal Mining Project and envisages expansion in mining capacity from 2.50 Million Tonne Per Annum to 3.75 Million Tonnes per Annum in Phase-1 and to 5.0 Million Tonne Per Annum in Phase – 2 by Mechanized Opencast Minin Methodology using Conventional Shovel-Dumper Technology for Overburden Removal and Surface Miner Technology for Coal Mining. However, in Phase – 1 the enhancement of coal production shall be from 2.5 MTPA to 3.75 MTP (50% of the existing capacity), within the existing lease area of 1457.20 Ha. The envisaged Project Capital Cost is Rs. 650.39 Crores for Phase-1.
