Project Detail:
The National Urban Transport Policy 2006 of the national government promotes public transport to achieve safe, affordable, quick, comfortable, reliable, and sustainable access for the growing number of city residents to jobs, education, recreation, and such other needs within the cities. Rail-based urban mass transit has been chosen to provide such services in many cities in India, and the expectation is that this would also help alleviate air pollution, mitigate climate change, and make cities more climate-resilient through modern systems designs. The national government's Metro Rail Policy (2017) also stresses on the sustainability of urban rail systems. Metro rail systems, which have higher capacity and cost, have been the norm in larger cities. However, the national government has recently formulated specifications for lighter urban transport systems which have much lesser capital outlay, can meet the transport requirements of smaller cities, and have design features which further enhance operational sustainability. Metro neo is the most recent urban rail system, which has been designed to cater to the needs of medium and smaller cities.
