Chennai is the largest industrial and commercial center of south Indiaand a major cultural, educational, and economic center. It is well knownfor its developed automobile industry and a rapidly growing number offinancial services and information technology companies. Industrialdevelopments and increased economic activities have attracted peoplefor better livelihood and employment opportunities. According to theChennai Master Plan 2026, the population is expected to reach 12.5million by 2026.
Existing public transport is incapable of meeting the current and futuregrowing travel demands. Consequent to the lack of efficient publictransport systems, the city is witnessing a steep rise in private vehicleson roads, leading to traffic congestion and pollution.
To improve urban connectivity in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA),GoTN has decided to put in place a metro rail system, implemented inphases. Phase I (Corridor 1 and Corridor 2) is already operational, andPhase II is currently under construction.
