Pulicat is a historic seashore town and fishing area in Ponneri Taluk of Thiruvallur District, ofTamil Nadu state. Pulicat Lake is a shallow salt water lagoon stretching over a length of about60 km along the adjacent to the Bay of Bengal coast and is the second largest brackish waterlake or lagoon in India. The deep opening of about 0.8 km width situated about 1.6 kms northof the Pulicat light house. The area of the Pulicat Lake of Tamil Nadu is about 15,367 hec. Theminimum and maximum depth of Pulicat Lake is 0.2 m and 17.5 m respectively.
Due to net northerly littoral drift the formation of sand bars as well as spits and its migration aswell as modification is a common phenomenon along the east coast of India. In response to the changes in sediment transport rates and prevailing weather conditions, the location of theentrance to the lake often migrates, sometime also closes the entrance. This phenomena leadsto an adverse effect of hampering the smooth movement of vessels, as the depth of the channelis reduced.
Pulicat Lake, which is Pulicate village located in Ponneri Taluk of Tiruvallur District in Tamilnadu.Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras had visited the coastal stretch along with theofficials of Department of Fisheries and investigated the site conditions. A stakeholder meetingwas also held to understand the requirements of fishermen community.
