Administrative Approval and Expenditure Sanction for the project proposal Submitted by Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on “Planning and management for aquatic species conservation and maintenance of ecosystem services in the Ganga River basin for a clean Ganga” approved under the “Namami Gange” Programme an estimated cost of INR 113,99,28,587/- for five years - reg.
3. The project details are as follows:
This proposal aims to strengthen the aquatic biodiversity conservation measures at six identified biodiversity hotspots along the Ganga River, explore the natural and assisted colonization of species of
conservation significance to other stretches of main stem Ganga River and upscale the conservation activities to Ganga basin level.
Objective of the proposal:
a) To strengthen the aquatic biodiversity conservation measures at six identified biodiversity hotspots along the Ganga River.
b) To explore the natural and assisted colonization of species of conservation significance to other stretches of main stem Ganga River.
c) To determine the current state of aquatic environment and biodiversity of the major tributaries and wetlands in Ganga basin.
d) To identify direct and indirect drivers affecting the integrity of the aquatic environment and biodiversity in the Ganga basin.
e) To pinpoint problematic areas and identify conservation priority zones.
f) To establish aquatic species rescue and rehabilitation centres at strategic locations for animals in distress.
g) To involve communities and other stakeholders in the conservation process through capacity building, innovation and strengthening existing institutions.
h) To garner support for aquatic biodiversity and Ganga conservation through education and outreach programs.
i) To identify and analyse the hydro-socio-ecological relations in the river basin for efficient and targeted conservation action.
j) To prepare an action plan to minimize the negative impacts of the direct and indirect drivers on the aquatic environment and biodiversity of the select tributaries of Ganga basin.
k) To develop a centralized facility of laboratories and resource repository centre for aiding in science based management of the Ganga river and its tributaries
