Project Title :Shillong Water Supply project cost rises to Rs 770-cr for long-term infrastructure upgrade
Company Name : Private Company
Project Detail :The cost of the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase I) in Meghalaya has increased significantly, with the State Cabinet approving a revised estimate of Rs 770 crore, up from the earlier Rs 553 crore.
The revision reflects major design and structural changes aimed at improving the long-term sustainability of the project. A key modification includes shifting the proposed dam site further upstream after a scientific landfill was developed at Nonghali, rendering the original location unsuitable. The updated plan also incorporates the installation of dedicated electrical lines and additional land acquisition costs, which authorities consider essential for ensuring efficient and reliable water supply infrastructure. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that these changes are necessary to strengthen the durability and effectiveness of the system, which is expected to serve the capital city for decades.
Shillong has long faced challenges related to ageing and inadequate water infrastructure, leading to frequent shortages for residents. Once completed, the upgraded scheme is expected to significantly improve water availability and distribution across the city, addressing one of the region’s most persistent urban infrastructure issues.
