| Project Detail : | NLC India and Reliance Industries have joined hands to explore the development of an underground lignite gasification project in Gujarat, aimed at boosting domestic gasified fuel supplies amid ongoing global energy challenges. The two companies have signed an agreement to assess the feasibility and technical viability of converting lignite reserves into synthesis gas through underground gasification technology. The project will focus on two lignite blocks owned by NLC India in Gujarat. Preliminary technical studies are currently underway, with Reliance contributing its expertise in advanced gasification technologies. The collaboration is expected to evaluate the potential of utilising in-situ lignite resources to produce synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and other gases. The initiative is intended to help address domestic gas shortages and strengthen India’s energy security by reducing dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The project, if successful, could provide an alternative fuel source for industrial applications and serve as feedstock for chemical and fertiliser manufacturing. It also supports NLC India’s strategy of monetising its lignite reserves through innovative and sustainable technologies. |
