Project Title :Centre to fast-track deep-sea exploration, boost oil and gas data availability
Company Name : Private Company
Project Detail :The Centre intends to accelerate domestic deep-sea exploration through a proposed programme titled “Samudra Manthan,” aimed at improving geological data in offshore oil and gas blocks. The initiative will focus on acquiring seismic data in previously explored deep-water and ultra-deepwater regions to unlock untapped hydrocarbon potential.
The programme is expected to be led by the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), with government funding playing a key role due to the high costs associated with drilling and data collection. A final decision on whether the Centre will fully or partially finance the project is yet to be taken.
The push comes in response to long-standing concerns from global energy companies regarding limited availability of reliable geological data in Indian offshore blocks, which has hindered investment. By improving data access, the government aims to attract foreign investment and accelerate exploration activities.
Notably, the Centre has already opened nearly one million square kilometres of previously restricted “no-go” offshore areas—earlier limited due to defence, environmental, and strategic concerns—marking a significant policy shift to strengthen India’s energy security and exploration ecosystem.
