Project Title :Durgapur Steel Plant to get second unit with Rs 35,000-cr investment for capacity expansion
Company Name : Durgapur Steel Plant
Project Detail :The Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal is set to receive a second production unit nearly 67 years after the establishment of its first facility, marking a significant expansion in India’s steel manufacturing sector.
The proposed mega project, with an estimated investment of Rs 35,000 crore, is expected to enhance the country’s overall steel production capacity while reinforcing Durgapur’s role as a major industrial hub. Operated by Steel Authority of India (SAIL), the plant was originally established in the late 1950s with assistance from the United Kingdom and began operations in 1959 as one of India’s first integrated steel plants. Over the decades, it has evolved into a key producer of long steel products and remains the country’s only manufacturer of forged railway wheels and axles. The upcoming expansion is expected to further modernise production capabilities and introduce advanced technologies to improve efficiency and output.
The project also reflects India’s broader push to strengthen domestic steel manufacturing under growing infrastructure and industrial demand. Once implemented, the new unit is likely to play a crucial role in supporting downstream industries and reinforcing the nation’s self-reliance in critical steel production segments.
