| Project Detail : | The Odisha government has intensified efforts to provide round-the-clock drinking water supply in urban areas under the flagship SUJALA Programme, with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore planned for 2026–27. A high-level review of the Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO) chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Usha Padhee assessed multi-year action plans for 2026–29 and laid out a phased roadmap to achieve universal 24x7 water supply across all urban local bodies (ULBs). Currently, the state’s 86 ULBs, with a population of around 31.5 lakh, receive a combined supply of 452 million litres per day (MLD). The government has already extended continuous water supply to nine ULBs in 2025–26 and plans to expand coverage to 38 ULBs each in 2026–27 and 2027–28. Under SUJALA, 544 water supply projects have been sanctioned, of which 289 are completed and the rest are under implementation. For 2026–27, 391 projects, including 102 new ones, are planned, followed by 92 projects in 2027–28 with an outlay of Rs 978 crore. The initiative focuses on strengthening infrastructure, expanding distribution networks, and ensuring efficient water use, while officials have been directed to accelerate execution and avoid wastage of treated drinking water. |
