Project Title :Hapag-Lloyd to invest Rs 20,000-cr for ports infra, inland logistics in India
Company Name : Hapag Lloyd
Project Detail :Hapag-Lloyd, the world’s fifth-largest container carrier, has announced plans to invest up to Rs 20,000 crore in India across port infrastructure, inland logistics, Indian-flagged ships, and responsible ship recycling.
The investment in ship recycling aims to establish facilities in India that meet European Union standards, addressing the current shortage of compliant recycling yards needed by European shipping lines. As part of its expansion in India, Hapag-Lloyd also plans to reflag four vessels under the Indian flag. These ships will be smaller in size, suitable for deployment in India’s coastal shipping network, rather than the massive 24,000 TEU container ships, allowing for more flexible and efficient domestic operations. The initiative aligns with India’s broader maritime and port infrastructure development goals, strengthening coastal shipping, logistics, and port efficiency while promoting environmentally responsible ship recycling practices.
“A big majority of the Rs 20,000 crore will be split between setting up a container terminal in the upcoming Vadhvan port and in ship recycling because those are the real things where we put in money. When we talk about reflagging ships, it’s more aimed at enabling us to do cabotage (coastal shipping) trade,” Rolf Habben Jansen, Chief Executive Officer, Hapag-Lloyd, said at a media conference on 19 March, 2026.
