| Project Detail : | The Rs 890-crore revamp of Tambaram railway station aims to transform it into a modern transit hub with increased passenger capacity The project, set to be completed in three years, will raise the station's handling capacity from 13,500 to 28,750 passengers during peak hours. Additionally, the number of tracks will increase from 12 to 16, and three new platforms will be constructed. A direct-access platform from the east entrance is already being built, eliminating the need for foot overbridges and escalators. The plan includes additional foot overbridges, a new concourse, and upgraded station facades. "The redevelopment of Tambaram is part of a broader modernization scheme, similar to Egmore. When completed, the station's handling capacity will be bigger than Egmore, as the latter has space restrictions, while space is available in Tambaram. In future, more express trains are planned from Tambaram itself, for which the redevelopment is crucial," said an official, highlighting that Tambaram’s larger space will accommodate more express trains. |
