Project Detail :The Indian Railways has significantly ramped up infrastructure investments in Bihar, with a sanctioned outlay of ?86,107 crore across 52 major projects as of April 1, 2025. This includes 31 new line projects, 1 gauge conversion, and 20 doubling/multitracking initiatives, totaling 4,663 km. So far, 1,014 km has been commissioned with ?29,353 crore already spent.
Compared to ?1,132 crore per year between 2009-2014, the annual allocation has surged nearly 9 times to ?10,066 crore in 2025-26. New track commissioning has also jumped over 2.5 times, from 318 km in 2009-14 to 1,899 km between 2014-25.
Key completed projects include the Munger (?2,774 Cr), Kosi (?516 Cr), and Patna (?3,555 Cr) bridges, in addition to doubling and electrification works across the state. Advanced engineering and planning post-2014 enabled significant progress on projects previously delayed for years
Ongoing major projects include the ?2,090 Cr Vikramshila-Ganga Bridge line, ?2,140 Cr Pirpainti-Jasidih new line, and ?5,148 Cr Sonnagar-Patratu multitracking. Rail connectivity in Bihar is being expanded under the Eastern, North Eastern, East Central, and Northeast Frontier Railways.
To boost connectivity further, 8 new rail surveys have been initiated, covering over 1,350 km including proposed lines like Chhapra-Katihar and Bihta-Aurangabad.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 98 railway stations in Bihar are being modernized with better amenities, multimodal integration, and passenger facilities. Stations such as Gaya, Saharsa, Muzaffarpur, and Luckeesarai are seeing significant upgrades.
From 2014 to 2025, 558 Road Over/Under Bridges (ROBs/RUBs) have been constructed in Bihar. Another 218 ROBs/RUBs worth ?6,014 Cr are sanctioned and in various stages of planning and execution.
Bihar is also benefitting from the rollout of modern trains. The state is served by 20 Vande Bharat, 10 Amrit Bharat, and 2 Namo Bharat express services, enhancing speed and connectivity across the region.
These transformative developments mark a new era of railway infrastructure growth for Bihar, accelerating connectivity, boosting economic growth, and enhancing passenger convenience.
