| Project Detail : | The Union government has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) from 2024 to 2028 but will restrict central funding to only eligible states and projects that strictly adhere to the programme’s operational guidelines. “Costs related to drinking-water projects, which are ‘inadmissible’ and don’t conform to operational guidelines, will not be funded,” said an official. The mission aims to connect all 193.6 million rural households in India with piped water, of which 81 percent have already been covered. Only projects with sustainable water sources—such as large lakes and natural reservoirs—and provisions for recharge, greywater management, and rainwater harvesting will be considered for funding. In a letter dated June 16, the Jal Shakti ministry informed states that “central grants-in-aid” would be provided “only after getting approval from the competent authority.” Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil confirmed on June 26 that complaints of cost escalation are under scrutiny. The Centre will only cover costs defined as “central liability” under the scheme’s 50:50 funding model. |
