Project Title :Coal India’s FMC-based coal transport sees 34 percent growth in FY25 in India
Company Name : Coal India Limited
Project Detail :Coal India (CIL) recorded a 34 percent year-on-year rise in environment-friendly coal transportation via First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects, reaching 102.5 million tonne (MTs) in FY 2025, up from 76.5 MTs in FY 2024. The coal was transported through 20 FMC projects integrated with the Indian Railway network, compared to 17 projects the previous year. In the current financial year up to May,
CIL has already reported 36.7 percent growth in coal movement via FMC routes, compared to 15 MTs during the same period last year. CIL plans to commission 19 new FMC projects with a combined capacity of nearly 150 MT/Y in FY 2026. A senior CIL official stated, “We expect to transport an estimated incremental quantity of 20 MTs through FMC projects in the ongoing financial year.”
The enhanced use of FMC systems led to a five percent reduction in underloading charges and improved coal grade conformity due to mechanized handling. CIL aims to commission 92 FMC projects totaling 994 MT/Y capacity by FY 2029, supporting its one billion tonne production target with eco-friendly, automated coal evacuation systems.
The FMC, an automated coal evacuation system designed to promote eco-friendly coal transportation from the pithead to loading points using piped conveyor belts. Its key components include the development of mechanized coal handling plants equipped with coal crushers. An example of FMC’s environmental advantage can be seen at the Gevra site, where a 10 MT capacity FMC project led to an approx. 84 percent reduction in particulate matter and other gaseous emissions compared to conventional pay loader-based loading at railway sidings.
