Project Detail :The Tamil Nadu State Highways Department is accelerating construction of the 132.87-km Chennai Peripheral Ring Road, which will be the state’s first 10-lane expressway upon completion. The ?12,301 crore project, scheduled to open by January 2026, aims to ease traffic congestion across the Chennai metropolitan area. Renamed as the Chennai Border Road, the greenfield expressway will stretch from Mamallapuram to Kattupalli Port, featuring six main lanes and two service lanes on each side, with vehicle speeds reaching up to 120 kmph. Two-wheelers will be restricted to service lanes to enhance safety and traffic flow.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has provided a loan of 40,074 million yen (?2,673 crore) for the first phase, covering the 25.31-km section between Ennore Port and Thachur. The Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) is executing the project under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model. Once completed, the Peripheral Ring Road will function as Chennai’s fourth ring road, connecting major industrial and logistics hubs such as Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Thiruvallur, Thamaraipakkam, Periypalayam, Puduvayal, and Kattupalli.
