Project Title :Kerala govt. approves Rs 306-cr second phase of Chellanam tetrapod project
Company Name : Government Of Kerala
Project Detail :The Kerala government has approved the Rs 306-crore second phase of the Chellanam tetrapod seawall project to protect the coastline from severe sea erosion. This phase will cover the remaining 3.6-km stretch between Puthenthode and Cheriyakkadavu in Ernakulam district, as originally envisioned in the first phase.
The first phase, completed in 2023, cost Rs 347 crore and covered 7.3 km, stopping short of Cheriyakkadavu due to revised estimates and IIT recommendations. The decision was made at a high-level meeting attended by Ministers P. Rajeeve, Roshy Augustine, and Saji Cherian. The second phase will be executed under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) scheme, with the renewed administrative sanction expected shortly.
Minister Rajeeve emphasised that the state is spending around Rs 100 crore per km, highlighting the lack of central support in protecting Kerala’s vulnerable shoreline. Chellanam is one of the 10 coastal erosion hotspots identified by the Irrigation Department. Rajeeve credited the Chief Minister and other officials for fast-tracking the project and promised urgent action to complete the remaining work. Additional Chief Secretary Biswanath Sinha, KIIFB Additional CEO Mini Antony, and MLA K.J. Maxy were also present at the meeting.
