| Project Title : | 90 percent work completed on North Guwahati Water Supply Project in Assam |
| Company Name : | Private Company |
| Project Detail : | The North Guwahati water supply project, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is 90 percent complete and is likely to be finished by August, according to officials from the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB). Once operational, the project will have the capacity to deliver 37 million litres of potable water per day, benefiting 15,000 households across five commissioned district metering areas (DMAs). After gaining momentum in 2022, the project saw the laying of pipelines along steep 21-foot slopes. GJB officials highlighted the risks of landslides damaging pipelines or threatening the reservoir's integrity. "We had sought the expertise of IIT-Guwahati, and based on their recommendations, we have constructed gabion retaining walls (stone-filled cages) to firmly secure the slopes and protect the reservoir. Most of the slope stabilisation work has been completed, with only a few stretches remaining," said Nipendra Mohan Das, Chief Engineer of GJB. Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah recently inspected the site and confirmed that the work is progressing as per IIT-Guwahati's advice. Water distribution will begin once all recommendations are implemented, though parts of the area are already served by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. |
