Project Title :Delhi govt. to transform Najafgarh Drain into 30 MW solar power project
Company Name : Government Of Delhi
Project Detail :The Delhi government has announced plans to convert the Najafgarh Drain into a 30 MW canal-top solar power project to promote clean energy and conserve water. The first phase will cover a six km stretch from Dhansa Border to Ghummanhera and is expected to generate five MW of power while saving 270 million litres of water annually by reducing evaporation. This initiative forms part of Delhi’s broader strategy to triple its solar energy capacity by 2027.
The project will be executed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, and similar canal-top solar installations are under consideration for other major drains like the Barapullah and Agra canals. The Najafgarh Drain, a major source of Yamuna River pollution, is also undergoing desilting and rejuvenation as part of river clean-up efforts. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, LG VK Saxena, and PWD Minister Parvesh Verma are directly overseeing the project.
Additionally, 32 real-time water monitoring stations will be installed, including 10 on the Yamuna. The Delhi Cabinet has approved solar subsidies, offering Rs 1,08,000 for three KW panels and Rs 10,000 for one KW systems. The Delhi Vidhan Sabha will also become the country’s first solar-powered state assembly with a 500 KW plant.
