| Project Title : | Aluva Drinking Water Project in Kerala faces delay, forward step after monsoon |
| Company Name : | Kerala Infrastructure Development Corporation |
| Project Detail : | The Kerala Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA)'s proposed drinking water project in Aluva is likely to face further delays. Although a recent meeting chaired by the Chief Minister decided to proceed, authorities have stated that concrete steps will only follow after the monsoon. The project, which received government approval and resumed pipe-laying work in April 2022, was halted due to strong opposition from local action councils and social organisations. Protesters claimed that the Periyar River lacks the water capacity to support a new industrial water project, and would exacerbate water shortages in the region. Though a study by the Water Resources Department found that 1,043 million litres of water would still be available in Periyar after meeting Kerala Water Authority's demand, the government’s active consideration of a larger 190 MLD Kerala Water Authority project has now shifted focus away from the Kinfra initiative. KINFRA officials expressed disappointment, stating the long-standing hurdles and public resistance have again placed the project on hold, with discussions likely to resume only after a few months. |
