| Project Title : | Centre to fast-track environmental clearances for Indus River Basin Projects in Jammu & Kashmir |
| Company Name : | Private Company |
| Project Detail : | The Centre has announced an expedited process for granting environmental clearances to all pending and proposed infrastructure projects in the Indus River Basin in Jammu and Kashmir. This move follows the government's decision to put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance in the wake of the recent Pahalgam attack. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav stated, “The ministry will ensure that all the green clearances/regulatory approvals for these strategic projects are granted expeditiously, while ensuring appropriate scientific rigour in the appraisal process.” The projects to benefit from this include critical hydro-electric ventures such as Uri Stage-II (240 MW), Kirthai-II (930 MW), and Sawalkot (1856 MW), which not only promise clean energy but also contribute to water storage through the creation of reservoirs. In addition to hydro-power generation, the government will also fast-track approvals for irrigation infrastructure and water storage projects in the region to maximise the utilisation of Indus waters. Although the Ministry of Environment had earlier implemented single-window systems and reforms to speed up clearance processes, this latest move reflects a stronger intent to prioritise projects of national and strategic importance in the region. |
