Project No :205409
Project Title :Small hydro projects may get up to 30 percent Central aid under govt. scheme in Jammu & Kashmir
Company Name : Private Company
Project Detail :The government is in the process of formulating a new scheme to promote small hydro power projects, offering developers up to 30 percent of the project cost as Central assistance. The scheme is expected to double India’s installed small hydro capacity from the current five GW to 10 GW over the next decade.
Small hydro projects—defined as those with a capacity of 25 MW or less, are managed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The country has an estimated potential of 21 GW for such projects, with Jammu & Kashmir alone having 1.3 GW potential, though less than 200 MW has been utilised so far.
Apart from clean energy benefits, these projects require less land, have lower environmental impact, and contribute to local job creation and irrigation. Often based on canals or run-of-river systems, they do not require large reservoirs, making them eco-friendly. The typical project cost is Rs 10-12 crore per MW, and the assistance is expected to encourage both lenders and local authorities to participate.
