| Project Detail : | The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to issue tenders for a desalination plant project next week to ensure that the city meets the increased demand of water in coming years. The project is expected to cost Rs 13,028 crore The proposed plant will be able to treat 200 million litres (MLD) of water daily and will be an eco-friendly venture. The civic council plans to design and build the project over the following three years. The first phase of the project is projected to cost Rs 5,625 crore to cater to increased water demand, and the second phase, which seeks to expand the plant to a capacity of 400 MLD, is expected to cost Rs 7,404 crore While Mumbai has a daily requirement for 4,400 MLD of water, the civic body is able to supply nearly 3,800 MLD currently. The proposed desalination facility will allow the civic authority to overcome the gap and alleviate water scarcity concerns The BMC earmarked a 12-hectare plot of land in Manori village in northern Mumbai, for the construction of this plant in 2022 A desalination plant is a manufacturing facility which removes the saline and mineral components of saltwater to make it suitable for human consumption and irrigation purposes |
