Project Title :Construction of Three Hostels Projects In Telangana
Company Name : Osmania University
Project Detail :In a first in the country, the Osmania University administration will work on an exclusive hostel for physically challenged students

With ramps, specially designed washrooms and cots, among other facilities, the hostel will be exclusively for 100 students who take admissions under various courses of the university. The university is also planning to construct three other hostels for the other students. These three will accommodate 1,000 students

The work will start in two months and we estimated that the new buildings will require Rs 72 crore. We will soon call for tenders,” said Prof S Ramachandram, OU Vice-Chancellor

This apart, the university wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, seeking grants for establishing a research centre named after Dr BR Ambedkar. “A pylon and administrative building will also be constructed as part of the centenary celebrations,” the V-C said

Non-boarders issue

Meanwhile, despite several requests and counselling attempts, illegal occupants in its hostels are still a major concern for the university. Estimates show that there were about 3,000 candidates illegally staying in the hostels. The issue has become a major hurdle for the university authorities when they have to take up repair works for the ageing hostel buildings. “We have once again issued notices to non-boarders. If they fail to vacate, they have to face raids and forceful eviction,” the V-C said

NAAC A+ valid for 7 years

OU, which secured A+ grade of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), will enjoy the status for seven years instead of the earlier five years. According to new NAAC rules, the grading will be valid for seven years for institutions which secure ‘A’ grade twice consecutively

In its report, the nine-member NAAC peer team recommended OU to fill up vacant teaching technical and other support staff positions. It also asked the varsity to procure more project-based research fund in arts, social sciences, law, education and management

While lauding good infrastructure in buildings and equipment, the team said the university has strong alumni base and land for future expansion. “The recommendations of the NAAC team are in the line of our thinking. We will take its recommendations forward and implement them,” said Prof Ramachandram

Convocation in November

Hyderabad: After four years, OU is gearing up for the convocation in November. The university is in the process of finalising the chief guest for the centenary convocation ceremony. According to officials, at least 1,600 PhD scholars and several PG students passed out from the university in the last four years. “The Governor is likely to be invited besides other eminent personalities. We are still in the process of finalising the guest list,” said a senior official
