Proposed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), it have toll plazas at the entrance or exit points A senior CMDA official said a consultant appointed to study the feasibility of the massive infrastructure project has estimated that the government will have to shell out the huge sum for making the elevated corridor into a reality. "It is a draft report that the consultant has submitted to us evaluating the cost for the proposed project," he said. A detailed project report would be prepared after the consultant submits the final report, he added The draft report comes at a time when the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is working on a separate proposal for an elevated corridor connecting Perungalathur and Chengalpet. While the stretch of GST Road between Meenambakkam and the outskirts of Tambaram is maintained by the state highways department, the rest comes under the purview of the NHAI. As per estimates of the NHAI, everyday, an average of 60,000 vehicles pass through the toll plaza at Paranur near Chengalpet, and another 10,000 are added during the weekends. On average, the traffic density on the national highway is 80,000 at Guduvancherry and Singaperumal Koil, the key junctions between Perungalatur and Paranur NHAI sources said the proposed elevated corridor will be a tollway. "Toll plazas will be established either at the entry or exist of the elevated highway," an official privy to the developments told. NHAI has also called for bids to appoint a consultant to study the proposal. "However, CMDA is in is an advanced stage of the proposal and has been working for more than two years for the elevated corridor," the official said, adding that the decision on which agency will take up the project was yet to be decided. "In the event of the state government executing it, we (NHAI) will hand over our stretch till Chengalpet to them," he said |
