Description |
The Project aims to (i) implement institutional reforms in the management of public utilities and environmental resources; (ii) improve the quality and availability of safe drinking water; (iii) rehabilitate and expand sewerage and sanitation system; and (iv) promote hygiene and sanitation through better solid waste management. (Piggybacked to this loan are: Management and Financial Advisory Services for the Restructuring of the Public Utilities Board; and Community Development and Participation Initiatives technical assistance.) |
Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy |
The growing demand for adequate water and sanitation services in South Tarawa has stretched the capacity of the existing system. The facilities for basic utilities are in poor state of repair and impair economic growth potential in Kiribati, exposing the population to serious health hazards. |
