Project Title :Thermal Power Project Expansion In Tamil Nadu
Company Name : Ministry Of Environment And Forests
Project Detail :The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has accorded environment clearance (EC) for expansion of Ennore thermal power project near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The EC has been accorded to the project with a capacity of 660 MW in 2009, but the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) could not complete the project, and in 2014, MoEF&CC extended the clearance for another five years ending in 2019. In early 2019, MoEFCC refused to extend the clearance as only 17 percent of the work had been completed and wanted TANGEDCO to apply once again for clearance. The discom complied and applied for clearance. The project is now expected to be completed in a period of five years. It is coming up at the same place where five thermal units of 110 MW and 60 MW, with a total capacity of 450 MW, functioned. The units were decommissioned a few years ago. The expansion is taking place at the ETPS complex which has 237 acre of land. Of this, 86 acre will be used to set up a unit with a capacity of 660 MW. The project will use the existing ash pond situated on 113.6 acre of land for disposing of ash. Including the pond, the new project will use 197.6 acre. Total coal requirement for the project is two million tonnes and the discom has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MMTC for the supply. Coal will be brought to Ennore port from mines in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and transported through conveyors.
