As part of the project, a video surveillance system will be commissioned by setting up of IP based outdoor security cameras across various locations in the city. The video surveillance data from various cameras will be stored and monitored at the command and control centre. The surveillance system will also have video analytics, facial recognition system, automatic number plate recognition and red light violation detection system. “We will install 500 fixed box cameras and 100 pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) cameras spread across 100 locations,” said an official

Mobile vans would also be used to capture the real-time video feed of an incident. These will be built on rugged vehicles and will house communications equipment that may be required to stream video feeds to command and control centre. “It is aimed to implement with one fabricated van, fixed with 2 fixed cameras and one PTZ camera,” said an official

Environment sensors

Smart environment sensors will gather data about pollution, temperature, rain, levels of gases in the city and any other events on a daily basis. The TNPCB has continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations in Koyambedu, Royapuram, Perungudi and Kodungaiyur. These stations also have capability for weather monitoring and wind directions, speed and ambient temperature. The TNPCB in association with CPCB has established 10 real time ambient noise monitoring sensors at Egmore, T. Nagar, Perambur, Guindy, Triplicane, Pallikaranai, Velachery, Washermanpet, Anna Nagar and Sowcarpet. “It is envisaged to install 18 such sensors so that there is complete coverage in all 15 zones of the Chennai Corporation and potentially polluted locations,” said an official
