Company Name : Goa Tourism Development Corporation Limited
Project Detail :The town and country planning (TCP) department's conservation committee cleared the Rs 100 crore Panaji-Reis Magos ropeway project after Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) gave a presentation and addressed the apprehensions surrounding the project

Conservation committee, which is chaired by the TCP minister also discussed the need for a heritage conservation policy for the state

The basic intention of the ropeway is to promote the fort," TCP minister Vijai Sardesai. "The apprehension was that the ropeway would weaken the Reis Magos fort because a road was to be built

GTDC chairman Nilesh Cabral was present for the conservation committee meeting and gave a presentation about the project's details

In October 2016, the Corporation of the City of Panaji had adopted a resolution not to permit GTDC's Reis Magos-Panaji ropeway projec

"The committee was not directly in favour of permissions to the ropeway between Reis Magos-Panaji, as the directorate of archives and archaeology (DAA) raised apprehensions about impact of vibrations from the ropeway road near the fort, which had been restored a few years back," a member of the panel said

Cabral said the road close to the fort would be used only during the construction of the ropeway and that users of the ropeway would alight from the cable car and walk up a pathway to the Reis Magos fort. The station for the ropeway would be about 80 to 90 metres from the fort, which has been declared as a conservation area

Land for the project has been acquired on lease from Reis Magos comunidade, and the cost of building the 1.4km ropeway is estimated to be around Rs 100 crore. The project will be executed on design-build-finance-and-transfer basis. The 13-member conservation committee meeting after nearly a year with nearly 25-30 issues pending for approval. During the meeting, Sardesai asked the members to prepare a concept note on a unique colour scheme for Goan houses

I asked the members to prepare a concept note on a colour protocol for Goa, to pick colours which are compatible for Goa's identity and which should be made compulsory for Goan houses," he said. The colour protocol for Goan homes is part of the proposal to have a heritage conservation policy

As part of the strategy, a decision was also taken to commission the Charles Correa Foundation for grading of heritage buildings in Panaji, Margao and other conservation areas

The conservation committee also cleared the restoration of the Christian Art Museum which has already been approved by National Monuments Authority
